When attending a patient, the provincial Public Health Officer Charles Bovary meets the daughter Emma Rouault with increasing frequency. Charles is ecstatic with his new wife, but Emma`s desires and illusions are shattered and she is bored of the banality of provincal life. After a fine overnight ball she gets even more fascinated of the world of wealth, is discontent and becomes moody and depressed. Neither her daughter can save the day. Emma gets more and more filled with lust of the local law clerk and of luxury. After a further affaire brakes up, Emma contemplates suicide and gets sick again. The money worse of Charles grow and his wife continues doing her part to ruin him. Ingesting drugs, she dies an agonizing death.
