Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (1890-1970) was a French general and statesman, who led the Free French during World War Two and went on to become the architect of the Fifth Republic. A decorated officer of the First World War, De Gaulle went on to chair the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944-1946.
