The Adventure of the Resident Patient

Description
One of 12 stories in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, first published in The Strand Magazine and Harper's Weekly in August 1893. Doyle ranked it 18th among his favorite Holmes stories. Dr. Percy Trevelyan, a young neurologist, seeks Holmes' help. Two years earlier, he agreed to a strange deal with Mr. Blessington, who furnished a house and paid all expenses so Trevelyan could start his practice. Blessington, who has heart trouble, lives there as a permanent patient and takes most of the doctor's earnings. Though Trevelyan has become successful, something about the arrangement worries him, prompting Holmes to investigate.

About the author:
Arthur Conan Doyle, born in Edinburgh in 1859, was a trained doctor who balanced his medical career with writing. He is best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in A Study in Scarlet in 1887. The detective's popularity grew rapidly, though Doyle famously attempted to end the character's run in 1893 to focus on more serious work. Public demand led him to revive Holmes, and he went on to write dozens of stories featuring the iconic sleuth. Doyle also wrote historical novels and non-fiction, but it is Holmes who remains his most enduring legacy.
